Alone in a strange land

I arrived in Mumbai to heavy rain and was the only person on the beach. I spent a night there on my own before flying up to Bhuj the following day to meet Reena.

Why do all the best holidays start with a night on your own? There’s something about that lonely wandering, random discovery and total disconnect from home. Maybe a bit of alienation is good for you. It gets the old ‘you’ out of your system.

This is an old picture I dug out when I started collecting trees. I took it while visiting my oldest friend who was living in Sydney at the time. I’d just come out of a two-year relationship, so the holiday marked the start of a new freedom. And I guess, the beginning of building a treehouse. Not that the two have any connection. That would be weird: ‘who needs a man when I’ve got my trees…’
